Bark color is always best in full sun and sometimes can show up yellow on the north or shady side which gives the plant a totally different look depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. The leaves emerge light green in the spring and contrast very well off the bright red bark. The leaves darken and the bark lightens as summer arrives. An upright vase shaped form of coral bark maple. The bark is usually more red in winter compared to the salmon color of it's more famous cousin 'Sango kaku'. 'Beni kawa' also tends to be slightly wider and shorter. You will sometimes see 'Beni kawa' spelled as 'Beni gawa', this is due to a translation error when it was first brought to the U.S. and some growers have never corrected the mistake. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange and usually is an attractive combination of both.
