Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' - mapleridgenursery Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' Red Bamboo Japanese Maple
from $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Beni otake’ translates to red bamboo, which aptly describes this maple from the linearilobum group. The leaves are a little wider and sturdier than other linearilobum maples. Foliage emerges medium red in spring holding its color well into summer before first bronzing and then turning green. The interesting thing is, as you watch this tree from spring until summer the colors seem to be slightly different, displaying beautiful reds, purples and pinks from week to week, day to day or even hour to hour. In late summer new red growth pushes out of the top of the tree that is now green, giving it a very interesting appearance. Fall color is a really nice crimson. Growing faster than most linearilobum types, ‘Beni otake’ becomes a beautiful vase shaped tree eventually becoming slightly more round topped with age. The distinctive look and it's ability to tolerate full sun even in warmer climates make 'Beni otake' a perennial favorite. 10 year size:  Height: 10-12 Feet   Width: 6-8 Feet Spring Color: Red Summer Color: Burgundy Fall Color: Crimson Sun Tolerance: Full Planting: Elevated, Well Drained

Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure' Reticulated Japanese Maple
from $35.00
One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting Japanese Maples is nomenclature. This is compounded when different trees are introduced with the same name. There is a small green leafed dwarf with this name described by Vertrees before 1985. Since this tree was apparently introduced in 1987 according to Yano in his "Book for Maples", this name is illegitimate for this cultivar so we identify this plant as Amagi shigure "Japanese Selection"All this is even more distressing because this is an outstanding cultivar. Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more  pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular.    10 Year Size:  Height: 4-6 Feet   Width: 3-4 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Beni maiko' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Beni maiko' Corallinum Japanese Maple
from $35.00
‘Beni maiko’ means red dancing girl. Emerging foliage in spring is brilliant fire engine red turning pinkish before turning totally green by late May in Georgia. In spring it is hard to distinguish this cultivar from others like 'Shin de shojo' or 'Shishio Improved'. It probably does not hold its color as long as either of these cultivars but in summer after turning completely green it does something unique. The second season growth on mature plants will come out puckered. dark scarlet red with green veins and the lobes of the small odd leaves will sometimes be very strangely shaped. 'Beni maiko' has a very graceful habit, starting off as openly vase shaped when young becomig more round topped with age. Fall color is usually orange.10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet    Width: 6-8 feetSpring Color: RedSummer Color: GreenFall Color: OrangeSun Tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

Acer palmatum 'Baldsmith' Lace Leaf Japanese Maple
from $35.00
In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated,  'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. Fall color ranges from yellow to red to orange.Height: 4-6 Feet Width 6-8 Feet in ten yearsSpring Color: RedSummer Color: Green Fall Color: OrangeSun tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

Acer palmatum 'Sherwood Flame' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Sherwood Flame'
from $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Sherwood Flame’ was selected by Will Curtis of Sherwood, Oregon from a seedling of  'Burgundy Lace', 'Sherwood Flame is an excellent addition to any garden. I have read many descriptions of this plant written by authors who consider this cultivar very similar to its parent. I have to respectfully disagree. At least in our climate this plant is very different. In early spring 'Sherwood Flame' may be quite purple like its parent but the rest of the year it appears much more red than burgundy. The growth habit is also decidedly more upright. Fall color is red and wonderful on these very pretty deeply serrated leaves. 10 Year size: Height:  14-16 Feet   Width:  8-12 Feet
Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version)
from $35.00
Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. Fall color is a predictable bright red and a great edition to any landscape.10 Year Size:  Height 6-8 Feet Width 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' Rough Bark Japanese Maple
from $35.00
Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' translates to rough bark and that perfectly describes the most outstanding feature of this interesting cultivar. It takes 3-5 years for the bark to begin to develop its texture, but once it begins to develop it soon becomes an amazing site. The bark on older plants looks alot like that of a pine tree. The leaves of the new growth emerge with a yellow tint turning green as summer arrives before turning beautiful tones of red, orange or yellow in fall. 'Arakawa'  works well for bonsai.10 Year size Height:  12-14  Feet    Width:  10-12  Feet

Acer palmatum 'Beni shidare' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Beni shidare' Red Lace Leaf Japanese Maple
from $35.00
Acer palmatum ‘Beni shidare’ is one of the most pendulous varieties we grow. It has deep purple red color in spring and maintains its color well into summer before turning bronze and then green. Fall color is  bright red and striking. This is probably one of the oldest red dissectum forms, as the name simply means red cascading, at one time all red weeping forms were given this name. Over time a superior clone must have been selected and remains in production today. Very old plants with this name still exist in Japan that are over 15  feet tall and 20 feet wide.10 year size:  Height: 3-4 Feet    Width 5-7 Feet
