Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

Acer palmatum 'Mayday' is one of the most sought after Japanese Maples currently on the market. 'Mayday' is a Mikawa yatsabusa variant with bright yellow color in the spring. Throughout the summer this yellow turns to a light green and can sometimes show subtle variegation. 'Mayday' grows just like Mikawa yatsabusa with short nodes and bunched up buds creating a shingled leaf effect. 'Mayday' is a slower grower than Mikawa yatsabusa and will only reach a few feet tall at maturity. This is an extremely rare Japanese maple that will likely always be in short supply.

One of the best dwarf maples, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is very slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. Short inter nodal lengths with leaves that layer over one another not only define this elegant small tree but make it difficult to propagate and quite rare in nurseries. Fall color can range from bright yellow to spectacular red. This great little plant was found in the 1970s in the Tōkai region of Japan and named after the old Mikawa province there.

Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is one of the most unusual Japanese maples that we grow at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Miss Piggy’ is a dwarf tree with sturdy branching and bunched up leaves that are caused by fasciations at the tips of the branches. These fasciations usually seen in conifers and are extremely rare in Japanese maples. The leaves can sometimes grow so close together that they completely encircle the branches. When this occurs, you can look straight down the branch and see a perfect ring of leaves that almost make it look like an eye. ‘Miss Piggy’ has green foliage most of the year until fall when the leaves turn an attractive orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 2-4 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Fall color is usually red and very good, some years it can be quite stunning.

While similar, ‘Tattoo’ grows slower, stays smaller, and has more deeply divided leaves than ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’. ‘Tattoo’ leafs out with lime green leaves in the spring that turn to a dark green by summer. Acer palmatum ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’ lineage. ‘Tom Thumb’ stays very small and compact with the typical leaves of ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’. ‘Tom Thumb’ has more of a shrubby, rounded habit compared to others in the same family. ‘Tom Thumb’ comes out lime green in the spring before darkening to a dark green in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Kaen' is a dwarf Japanese maple with bronze colored leaves in the spring. These leaves change to green for most of the summer. Fall color is orange to red. 'Mikawa Kaen' is a relative to the ever popular 'Mikawa yatsubusa' However, the leaf colors are different for 'Mikawa Kaen'. 'Mikawa Kaen' also has a slightly different leaf shape than 'Mikawa yatsubusa'. Being in the Mikawa family, 'Mikawa Kaen' has a dense habit with leaf nodes that grow very close together creating the shingled leaf pattern that has made 'Mikawa yatsubusa' so famous.
