Acer palmatum ‘Winter Red’ is a wonderful coral bark Japanese maple with bright red bark especially in the winter. The leaves emerge light green in the spring and contrast very well off the bright red bark. The leaves darken and the bark lightens as summer arrives. In fall, the leaves of ‘Winter Red’ become a bright, golden yellow that really stand out in the landscape. ‘Winter Red’ does not grow nearly as large as similar coral barks like ‘Sango Kaku’ or ‘Beni kawa’, making it an excellent coral bark for nearly any location.

Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. 'Cecilia' was found as a chance seedling from 'Tamukeyama' and shares many of the color characteristics with its parent plant. The leaves of 'Cecilia' are dark red becoming bright red in the fall. The dark red color and leaf shape of 'Cecilia' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Where it differs from Ryusei is in it's stunning large leaves. The leaves on Rikuzen shidare have a similar shape to an upright grower called 'Osakazuki'. Fall color on Rikuzen shidare is also different from Ryusei as it goes yellow in the fall verses red.

We are now offering Grafting Classes for anyone interested in learning about the process of propagating Japanese maples cultivars. This class will take you through the entire process of grafting a Japanese maple. In this class you will get to graft four Japanese maples from start to finish. You will get to take these grafts home with you and hopefully watch them grow into beautiful Japanese maple varieties.
Our grafting class typically takes about two hours to go through the whole process from start to finish. We will provide all the materials needed for grafting the Japanese maples. At the end of the class you get to keep your grafting knife as well as the four Japanese maples that you grafted. You can book this two hour experience for just $97.
You can now book the in-person grafting class by clicking the book now button. These are scheduled as one on one classes, but we should be able to accommodate up to four people in a party. The cost of the class is per person, so everyone taking the class will need to pay for the class. However, only one purchase is required at the time of booking. Other party members can pay the day of the class.
We also plan to offer a virtual class as well, but we will have more details on that at a later time.
