'Red Pygmy' may not be the best named linearilobum but it is one of the best all around Japanese Maples. Although slower growing than some of the vigorous forms of linearilobum, 'Red Pygmy' can attain heights of more than 15 feet with age. While it comes out red in spring and may hold color into the summer in some areas, 'Red Pygmy' quickly turns green as temperatures begin to rise in hot climates. The green is a dark rich green throughout the summer then as a startling contrast this plant will turn bright yellow or gold in fall. 'Red Pygmy ' leaves have some of the narrowest lobes of the red linearilobums often having an interesting twist in the lobe. 'Red Pygmy' tolerates sun well. Acer palmatum ‘Sagara nishiki’ is a variegated Japanese maple with excellent yellow variegation splashed all over the foliage. The yellow variegation is more strongly concentrated along the edges of the leaves but there can be specks and splashes all over some leaves. ‘Shojo Shidare’ does very well in hot climates. The spring color is purple and holds well into the summer even in Georgia. Fall color is almost scarlet and very strong. A fast growing, very pendulous dissectum, 'Shojo shidare' will mound into an excellent specimen in just a few years. 'Shojo shidare' is rare in the trade because it can be difficult to propogate, which is all the better for you collectors if you should be lucky enough to find one. Acer palmatum 'Red Feathers' Dwarf Japanese Maple

This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.

Acer palmatum ‘Kin pai’ is a variegated form of ‘Osakazuki’. Everything about ‘Kin pai’ is similar to that of its parent plant, ‘Osakazuki’, except for the pink and red edges to the leaves. The leaves of ‘Kin pai’ are also much narrower than the large leaves of ‘Osakazuki’. The variegation on the leaves of ‘Kin pai’ is most prominent in the spring, but can be seen pretty much all Sumer as well. This selection from Hefner's Nursery in Conover, NC is the latest edition to the better than 'Bloodgood' saga. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates. 'Cecilia' was found as a chance seedling from 'Tamukeyama' and shares many of the color characteristics with its parent plant. The leaves of 'Cecilia' are dark red becoming bright red in the fall. The dark red color and leaf shape of 'Cecilia' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Cecilia' should grow well and hold its color even in hotter sunnier climates. 'Ruby de Sofia' is a beautiful reticulated variety that has fantastic colorations of pink and white in the spring. This tree was introduced by Angel Mendoza and named after his daughter Sofia.
