Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Kawahara no midori' is a fast growing, upright Japanese maple with bright green leaves and bright green bark. You may be familiar with coral bark Japanese maples, but did you know there are also Japanese maples with green bark? Many Japanese maples have a greenish bark when they are young, but its a much more natural looking green. 'Kawahara no midori' has bright green bark that actually stands out in a crowd of other plants. The leaves of 'Kawahara no midori' are green in the spring and summer and turn bright yellow in the fall.

Acer palmatum 'Mardi Gras' shows more color in early spring than just about any Japanese Maple. Wonderful pink and white colors show up on new growth. Late season growth in summer will give you another blast of color. Older plants do not tend to show nearly as much variegation as younger more vigorous plants. Heavy pruning just prior to leafing out in the spring can sometimes return older plants to the vibrant colors of younger plants.

Acer palmatum 'Oshio beni' Red Japanese Maple

A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. It will not hold it's color as long into the hot summers of the Southeast as well as some other cultivars, turning green by late June in Atlanta. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles. Acer palmatum Hoshi Zora' is a Japanese maple with a dramatic weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' is very similar to the ever popular 'Ryusei'. 'Hoshi Zora' has bright green leaves in the spring that darken to an emerald green in the summer. Fall color is a bright and stunning orange. 'Hoshi Zora' grows with mostly just a downward, weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' will need to be staked to achieve any measurable height. Acer palmatum 'Higasayama' Variegated Japanese Maple

In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. These limbs will usually put out typical leaves the next spring if not they should be removed. Fall color can be quite dramatic with reds oranges and yellows.
Our Higasayamas aren't showing much variegation this year but Higasayama is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility. If you receive a Higasayama without much variegation, it should variegate again in the future.
