One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is wonderful and often described as raspberry red.

We find 'Matsugae' to be a very dependable variegated cultivar in the southeast. In spring it opens with cream and rose markings along its irregular shaped medium green leaves. In summer the rose color fades away and the cream turns pure white leaving beautifully contrasting variegation all summer long. Red petioles also add to the overall appearance of 'Matsugae'. This is a very old cultivar with a name that means 'the pine branch' which is hard to understand for a variegated cultivar. This plant is similar to 'Kagiri nishiki' but is faster growing and has better variegation. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' is known not only for being small in stature but also for having small red leaves that are more narrow at the base and tip but wider in the middle. The nice wine-red color holds into summer before tuning green and tolerates sun well in all but the hottest climates. Appropriately named 'Beni ubi gohon' means five long red fingers. Fall color is crimson.

Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg' Red Japanese Maple

Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures. Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red. There is some speculation that 'Trompenburg' may have shirasawanum parentage due to the fact that the samaras are held erect. 10 Year Size: Height: 15-18 Feet Width: 10-14 Feet
