Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. ‘Pixie' is very similar to the more famous 'Bloodgood in mature shape only much smaller. ‘Pixie’ has foliage that emerges bright red in spring before turning much darker and holding its deep red color well into the summer even in hot climates. Then the show starts as the foliage turns first scarlet then becoming fire red as temperatures drop in fall. Acer palmatum 'Mimaye' is an upright growing Japanese maple with attractive green foliage. The leaves of 'Mimaye' are rather small and have a somewhat rounded dhape.
