Acer palmatum 'Matsugae' Variegated Japanese Maple

'Matsugae' is a rare tree in the nursery trade. The first 'Matsugae' tree I purchased was back in 2006 while living in California and it was eventually planted in the Nature Preserve in western Michigan. It is still there and thriving. During my decades of collecting, growing, studying and photographing Japanese Maple tree varieties, finding another 'Matsugae' seemed to be a daunting task. That is until I found one at Maple Ridge Nursery. I immediately purchased it and is now with me in a different location. It will be planted in my second Nature Preserve and I will continue to photograph it and compare these photos with my other pictures from this variety in the Michigan Nature Preserve. One of the advantages this variegated tree has over many of the other beautiful variegated maples is, it can take full sun all day long. Even the hot and dry California sun in the high desert of Ojai, California, where I initially grew my first 'Matsugae'. I am thankful to Maple Ridge for continuing to offer rare and unknown varieties for me to study, and photograph and to share with the world of Japanese Maple Trees lovers.

from 545 reviewsMy trees arrived healthy and well packaged. They have been in the ground for a few weeks and still look good. I planted in mid February and it’s now March. I’m excited to see what they look like this summer. Will definitely order more from this nursery.

Too early to say.

Very nice little tree, Very nice shape.
Can't wait to see it leaf out.

I already have a coral bark maple, but this maple's bark is a brighter, stronger coral color. And the "free Friday shipping" was hard to pass up!!

I bought 2 Japanese Maples last year that arrived in beautiful shape due to great care in packing. I hope they survived our unusual extreme cold at times this winter. We were changed from Zone 4 to Zone 5a last year so I wanted to take a chance. I'm hopeful even though we haven't had any measurable insulating snow which is not the norm here. I also just received my Picea Abies Dandylion in great condition even though it was below zero here when it arrived. I felt more sorry for the delivery person who had to go out in the cold to get it to me! Maple Ridge Nursery is by far my fave because of the pricing, quality, shipping, and professionalism Thank you!

I have had the pleasure of purchasing beautiful and healthy trees from Maple Ridge for many years now and this is another excellent Acer Dissectum. I grew this variety at the Michigan Preserve and now I will have it at the New York Preserve to continue photographing and observing it for an upcoming Volume. Thank you everyone.

Order 7 gallon conifer. Was larger and arrived more quickly than expected. Good and prompt communication about the tree from vendor. Great service!

Healthy and well packaged! As always Maple Ridge does a great job. From growing & packaging. Perfect condition

Very fast delivery and a beautiful tree, as always. Can't wait for this baby to trunk up.

I was introduced to this tree in a friend's yard many years ago, and until now I couldn't find one that wasn't too expensive for me. It's a small tree but it will grow! Looks like a nice healthy seedling, about 16 inches tall.

Much appreciated

I got a beautifull 3gal plant.I is very nice and full.

Great looking and healthy tree. Highly recommend Maple Ridge Nursery.

I am very impressed with Maple Ridge Nursery. The 2 Dwarf Japanese Maples 'Elizabeth' arrived lovingly packaged and very healthy. Maple Ridge Nursery also provided information on how to unpack the trees as well as how and when to plant. They truly want their customers to enjoy these beautiful trees for many, many years. I would recommend Maple Ridge Nursery to everyone. There are no regrets.

This was my first time ordering. The Katsura was the gallon xl size and I was quite surprised by the size of it for the price. It was shipped dormant so hoping to see it leaf out nicely in the spring

We are constantly putting trees in larger pots to allow them to grow and not become root bound. Therefore, many of our trees may have loose dirt in the pot until the roots fill out the container.
All of our Japanese Maples are grafted with a side veneer graft unless specifically stated as seedlings. This style of grafting is most commonly used in the nursery industry and allows these trees to still become excellent bonsai as the graft scar will be no longer visible when the trees age.
