'Stella Rossa' translates to Red Star. The habit of this cultivar is decidedly weeping, delicate and graceful. While it tolerates full sun, 'Stella Rossa' would like to have a little shade in hotter climates. The foliage of 'Stella Rossa' emerges bright red in early spring holding the bright red color well into summer before turning darker red and eventually burgundy. In very hot climates it turns bronze by September but never totally green like most other red maples in our nursery. While it may be a little slower growing than many of the dissectums it holds its bright red color in the Southeast better than almost every other cultivar. Acer palmatum ‘Tiger Rose’ has light green leaves that first emerge with a slight red cast. When the red fades away the cream colored leaves are heavily contrasted with the dark green veins. Acer palmatum ‘Vic’s Broom’ is a fast growing dwarf Japanese maple with tiny leaves. These small leaves emerge in spring light green with red edges. The leaves transition to solid green by late spring. The leaf of 'Washi-no-o’ is a little more coarse than some dissectums and the margins of each lobe are cut more regularly and less deep than most dissectums giving it a very unique texture. This mounding shrub type maple tolerates more sun than most green lace leafs. I have even grown this cultivar in full sun in Atlanta, Georgia but some shade would be appreciated. 'Waterfall' is quite similar to Acer palmatum 'Viridis', however the leaf shape can be slightly different as well as different variations of yellow and orange fall color. Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. Acer sieboldianum ‘Seki no kegan’ is like many other sieboldianum maples in that it is extremely hardy and displays wonderful orange. red and yellow fall color.
