Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Autumn Fire’ grows more prostrate than pendulous forming a beautiful mushroom shaped mound. The new spring foliage emerges light green edged in pink. As summer arrives the pink fades and the green leaves become darker. Acer Palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is One of the Most Popular Red Dwarf Japanese Maples Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is a beautiful dwarf Japanese maple that has become one of the most famous Japanese maple varieties in existence. Introduced in 1965 ‘Crimson Queen’ has become the standard by which all red, lace leaf Japanese maples are judged and probably the most common dissectum grown in America. 'Crimson Queen' is one of the very best dwarf Japanese maple varieties. Its color, when in prime leaf, is unsurpassed. 'Crimson Queen' leafs out early in spring with a lighter red color that darkens as spring progresses. 'Crimson Queen' will tolerate full sun, even in hot climates but it is much happier if it can be provided with a few hours shade during the day or indirect light. Under perfect conditions Crimson Queen can hold its red color as well or better than most cultivars. In hotter climates 'Crimson Queen' will lose its red color in the summer with the leaves turning a greenish color with a bronze hue. The fall color is then a stunning bright red. Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' will thrive with varying results in zones 5 through 9. The growth habit is decidedly pendulous and will form a beautiful low mound only gaining height as it matures and begins to mound over itself. 'Crimson Queen' will only grow to about 4 to 6 feet tall while growing to a larger width of 6 to 8 feet wide. ‘Disscetum Nigrum’ is known for the silver hairs covering the emerging foliage in early spring,  this old cultivar is a great addition to any garden. Although originally found in Japan, 'Dissectum Nigrum' was named in the Netherlands in 1938. Spring color is dark red and holds well into the summer in most areas but does bronze before turning an attractive olive green rather quickly in hot climates. Fall color is bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles.  This variety is said to come from South Korea but has a Japanese name that means the tube. 10 year size:  Height: 5-7 Feet   Width: 4-5 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Garnet' will Provide Great Red Color for a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple in Full Sun Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’ is a great weeping dwarf Japanese maple for red color. ‘Garnet’ emerges a light red color in spring which deepens and holds through most of the summer. The leaves on this beautifully shaped tree then brighten to a bright garnet red color in fall. 'Garnet' is one of our favorite red lace leaf varieties for warmer climates. ‘Heartbeat’ is an Australian cultivar that is just making its way into the gardening culture of the United States. 'Heartbeat' would be a great addition to any garden. The leaves are extremely dissected with lobes that are held very far apart, making the overall leaf almost appear round. The habit is very low and spreading forming a plant that is much wider than tall. Spring color is more red and less purple than other similar Japanese Maples. As summer approaches leaves turn first bronze then green but this vigorous grower seems to put on new red growth at the tips all summer long even in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Hime Shojo’ is an awesome little Japanese maple discovered in Japan before 1994 that is a really exciting addition to the U.S. market. While the new growth is a very bright almost cherry red the small deeply divided leaves soon harden off to the classic dark maroon that the Japanese refer to as shojo. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates. Fall color is a bright cherry red and better than many small cultivars. Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is One of the Most Unusual Dwarf Japanese Maples that we Grow at Maple Ridge Nursery Acer palmatum ‘Miss Piggy’ is a dwarf tree with sturdy branching and bunched up leaves that are caused by fasciations at the tips of the branches. This means that the branches have actually fused together. These fasciations are more commonly seen in conifers and are extremely rare in Japanese maples. The leaves can sometimes grow so close together that they completely encircle the branches. When this occurs, you can look straight down the branch and see a perfect ring of leaves that almost make it look like an eye. 'Miss Piggy' doesn't get very big, maturing to only about 5 or 6 feet tall, but it is a fast grower especially for a dwarf Japanese maple. ‘Miss Piggy’ has small palmate leaves that are light green in the spring and darken just a bit in the summer. In the fall the leaves turn an attractive orange and red. 'Miss Piggy' can handle a good bit of sun in all but the hottest climates where it would need at least some shade in the afternoon. Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple that Changes Personality All Year Long Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is one of the fastest growing weeping dwarf Japanese maple varieties there is, but it still does not attain height very quickly. 'Orangeola' has a very pendulous habit and will have quite the waterfall look as it grows. 'Orangeola' can be a fast growing weeping Japanese maple especially when young which can create long shoots of weeping branches. This growth eventually helps 'Orangeola' develop into a low mounding Japanese maple that is a great for corners and centerpieces.
