Cryptomeria Japonica Japanese Cedar

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans nana’ is tightly compact and tends to grow with clumps of foliage. The small cones are abundant and very attractive. The cones first appear in fall as a very light almost lime green that contrast to the dark green foliage making 'Elegans Nana' one of the most interesting plants in the Autumn garden. During winter the cones turn first gold, then brown and during colder winters in the south, the foliage will bronze sometimes taking on an almost purple cast. Then in spring you get the same effect as fall when the new growth emerges lime green against the dark older foliage. It will grow equally well in the full sun of Georgia or in very dark shade and provide interest all year long, making this one of the most versatile conifers and one of my favorites.10 year size: Height: 2-3 Feet Width: 1-2 FeetColor: GreenSun Tolerance: Full

'Globosa Nana' has very attractive medium green foliage and a nice formal texture. This plant will form an almost round dense globe when young with no pruning necessary. As it gets older it looses the round look of its youth and becomes a very stately formal mound. During southern winters 'Globosa Nana' does not bronze but maintains it's great green summer color. Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’ is a dwarf Japanese Cedar with a dense shape. ‘Vilmoriniana’ has stiff green branches that turn bronze in the winter. ‘Vilmoriniana’ grows very slowly and develops into an irregular shaped shrub.10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 feet Width: 1-2 feet

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sprialiter falcata’ is a dwarf form of Japanese cedar with an upright, conical habit. ‘Spiraliter falcata’ will eventually develop into a full shrubby conifer. The unusual thing about this plant is the irregular, twisting branches that spiral and twirl all over. This phenomenon is most common at the tips of the branches. Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan’ is a medium to large growing Japanese cedar. The foliage of ‘Sekkan’ is a yellow-green that really shines in full sun. ‘Sekkan’ is a fast growing cryptomeria that grows at least a foot per year eventually reaching 12 to 15 feet in 10 years. 10 Year Size: Height: 12-15 feet Width: 6-8 feetColor: Yellow-GreenSun Tolerance: Full

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Lobbi nana’ is a dwarf Japanese Cedar with dark green foliage that changes to a bronze color in the winter. ‘Lobbi nana’ is small and compact in stature making it a perfect companion plant for nearly anywhere in the landscape or as a center piece in a small garden.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 2-4 feet

'Knaptonensis' is an upright Crytptomeria with new foliage that is pure white. Best situated in morning sun and afternoon shade, as 'Knaptonensis' tends to burn slightly in full sun in hotter climates. Some direct sun is required to provide the spectacular effect created from the contrast of the snow white new growth against the rich green older foliage. 10 year size:   Height: 3-5 Feet   Width: 2-3 Feet

Information abounds about the "Jade Dragon", most of it conflicting.This plant is often seen as 'Gyo kuryu' or 'Gyoku ryu' both incorrect. Gyoku means jade in Japanese and Ryu means dragon but there are no spaces between words so 'Gyokuryu' would be correct.Information about mature size and shape of 'Gyokuryu' also conflicts greatly. 'Gyokuryu' has a nesting habit when young and attains height very slowly growing only 2-3 inches per year. Eventually vertical shoots with elongated internodal length appear from the top of the plant that grow much faster, 12-18 inches per year. If left unchecked this plant can reach 15 to 20 feet quite easily. However, if the gardener wishes to keep the plant small, pruning the vertical shoots from the top of 'Gyokuryu' once or twice a year is all that is necessary to maintain a small beautiful rounded plant.Taking cuttings from the lateral branches produces a slow growing plant that will stay smaller about 3 to 4 feet in ten years or until the vertical growth appears. Growers taking their cuttings off the top vertical shoots produce plants that skip the nesting stage and grow straight up with much larger internodal separation. These plants can grow 10 feet or more in ten years creating a plant more like the species that can be used for screening. Either way the dark foliage is beautiful.'Gyokuryu' does not bronze in winter in most climates and grows wonderfully in full sun or heavy shade.10 year size:   Height: 4-10 Feet   Width: 4-6 Feet

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Araucarioides’ is a highly irregular Japanese cedar with snake-like branches. Branches extend out from a central end point of each branch creating multiple bunches of these long snake-like branches. This is one of the most unusual growing trees that we have at Maple Ridge Nursery and we often refer to it as our Dr. Seuss plant as it looks as though it belongs in a fictional world. ‘Araucarioides’ is slow growing when young, but speeds up after a few years and develops into a medium size tree. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Bandai’ is a mounding form of Japanese cedar with the foliage appearing to form in tight dark green clumps. It will be slightly taller than wide. It will grow equally well in sun or shade.This plant is sometimes called 'Bandai Sugi' but according to recently accepted rules for plant names the sugi has been dropped because it means Cryptomeria and thus is redundant. Cryptomeria Japonica 'Cristata' is mostly known for it's interesting cocks-comb shaped fasciations. Along with the very interesting fasciations you get a very attractive loosely branched, upright tree with bright green foliage.. Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu' is a dwarf Japanese cedar with an irregular shaped upright habit. 'Tansu' will have a dense conical growth habit as it matures. The foliage is dark green and clumpy.
