For a gardener with patience this very dwarf  Japanese white pine can become the star of the garden. This plant was found in England at Hillier's Nursery in the 1960's and named for the head propagator at the time, Graham Adcock. Growing only 1 to 2 inches per year Adcock's dwarf is often used in rock gardens, miniature train gardens and for bonsai. The very short dark blue-green needles are in perfect proportion to the small plant giving even a young specimen the appearance of a very old tree.  10 year size:   Height: 1-2 Feet   Width: 1-2 Feet

Pinus parviflora 'Aoba jo' is a small, upright growing Japanese White Pine with a dense growth habit. 'Aoba jo' has short, attractive, blue-green needles that curl slightly upwards. Pinus parviflora ‘Azuma’ is a dwarf Japanese white pine that is excellent for bonsai or rock gardens. ‘Azuma’ is known for its short, blue needles that slightly curl around the branches. ‘Azuma’ stays very short even at maturity, developing into a small dense tree. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 feet Width: 1-2 feet

Pinus parviflora ‘Billie’ is a charming dwarf evergreen conifer with a dense, pyramidal form that brings structure. Its short, soft needles emerge a light, silver-green color which offers a refreshing contrast to the more common blue-green tones found in many Japanese white pine cultivars. This slow-growing selection reaches approximately 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide in 10 years.  ‘Billie’ was originally raised as a seedling by John Proudfoot of Scotland and has become a sought-after variety for collectors and conifer enthusiasts alike. 'Billie' can handle full sun in most climates, but prefers some shade in the hottest climates.   

Pinus parviflora 'Blauer Engel' is an upright growing Japanese White Pine with bright blue-green foliage. The needles are longer than typical Japanese White Pines and the bright blue color definitely makes this pine stand out among others. 'Blauer Engel' has an upright and very dense growing habit.  10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

Pinus parviflora 'Burke's Bonsai' is a dwarf Japanese white pine with a compact yet somewhat open growth habit. 'Burke's Bonsai' has exceptionally short, blue-green needles and relatively short stems. These qualities make this an excellent dwarf Japanese white pine for bonsai as the name suggests. Pinus parviflora ‘Fukai’ is a small, upright growing Japanese white pine with variegated needles. The green needles have bands of golden yellow across them creating a striking appearance in the foliage. There are many times during the year that the foliage is a more standard blueish green, but when the variegation shows, this tree really pops. The needles are also a little thicker with a wavy flow. ‘Fukai’ is a fairly fast grower that matures to about 6 feet tall. However, like most other pines, ‘Fukai’ can be candle pruned to keep a shorter, denser form. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Pinus parviflora ‘Gimborn’s Pyramid’ is a slow growing, upright selection of Japanese white pine. ‘Gimborn’s pyramid’ grows clusters of short blue-green needles. The overall form of ‘Gimborn’s Pyramid’ is a dense, upright tree with a pyramid shape. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

This is a great cultivar of the Japanese white pines also known commonly as five needle pines. 'Glauca' is slow growing and narrow when young, becoming wider with age. Older trees can reach 25 feet or more but this takes many, many years. A beautiful specimen in the landscape, 'Glauca' has short curved blue green needles.  10 year size:   Height: 8-10 Feet   Width: 3-5 Feet
