Acer palmatum 'Cecilia' Red Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Cecilia' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. 'Cecilia' was found as a chance seedling from 'Tamukeyama' and shares many of the color characteristics with its parent plant. The leaves of 'Cecilia' are dark red becoming bright red in the fall. The dark red color and leaf shape of 'Cecilia' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Cecilia' should grow well and hold its color even in hotter sunnier climates. 'Cecilia' is a moderately growing upright Japanese maple that should mature into a very attractive small to medium sized tree perfect for nearly any yard.

Recently up-potted tree swimming in its soil

I received my 3-gallon ‘Cecilia,’ and unfortunately I was disappointed with the condition of the rootball on arrival.

Upon opening the box, it was apparent that the tree had been fairly recently up-potted. The original approximately 1-gallon-sized rootball had developed very little rooting into the surrounding soil of the larger container. A significant amount of loose soil had spilled into the shipping box, leaving large gaps around the rootball, with only a small amount of root growth extending into the newer soil.

I believe much of this damage could have been prevented with more secure packing at the soil surface. The tape placed across the top of the pot was not sufficient to hold the rootball and surrounding soil in place. There were still several inches of open space between the soil level and the top of the pot, which allowed the soil and relatively unsecured rootball to shift considerably as the package was jostled during shipment.
For a recently up-potted tree that has not yet rooted into the larger container, some type of packing material placed firmly over the soil surface would likely help preserve the rootball and prevent the surrounding soil from breaking apart during transit.

I also emailed the company with photos and video showing the condition of the trees upon arrival with feedback and suggestions regarding the shipping method in hopes of preventing similar damage to future orders. It has now been nearly two weeks, and I have not received a response.
