Acer Palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is One of the Most Popular Red Dwarf Japanese Maples
Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is a beautiful dwarf Japanese maple that has become one of the most famous Japanese maple varieties in existence. Introduced in 1965 ‘Crimson Queen’ has become the standard by which all red, lace leaf Japanese maples are judged and probably the most common dissectum grown in America.
'Crimson Queen' is one of the very best dwarf Japanese maple varieties. Its color, when in prime leaf, is unsurpassed. 'Crimson Queen' leafs out early in spring with a lighter red color that darkens as spring progresses. 'Crimson Queen' will tolerate full sun, even in hot climates but it is much happier if it can be provided with a few hours shade during the day or indirect light. Under perfect conditions Crimson Queen can hold its red color as well or better than most cultivars. In hotter climates 'Crimson Queen' will lose its red color in the summer with the leaves turning a greenish color with a bronze hue. The fall color is then a stunning bright red. Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' will thrive with varying results in zones 5 through 9.
The growth habit is decidedly pendulous and will form a beautiful low mound only gaining height as it matures and begins to mound over itself. 'Crimson Queen' will only grow to about 4 to 6 feet tall while growing to a larger width of 6 to 8 feet wide. Crimson Queen left on it's own is beautiful and graceful but with a little training can become a specimen anyone could be proud of.

'Garnet' is one of our favorite red lace leaf varieties for warmer climates. 'Garnet' is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple that can handle full sun even in these warmer areas. 'Garnet' doesn't just grow well in warm climates though as it will grow very well in zones 5 through 10.

Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’ is an extremely variegated Japanese maple discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Alpenweiss’ by Talon Buchholz. The leaves on ‘Ikandi emerge almost entirely pink before the green and white develop around the veins. The pink variegation fades to green and creamy white by summer time and eventually will turn orange to red in the fall. ‘Ikandi’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun, but morning or dappled sun help to provide excellent color to the variegated leaves in the spring. ‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves. New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. 'Chantilly Lace' grows into an irregular mound, some pruning of unruly branches will add to its appeal.

The first 4-6 weeks of spring there are very few Japanese Maples that can compete with the brilliant crimson red color of 'Bonfire' foliage. Unfortunately the spring color is short lived and turns first bronze and then green as summer nears. The growth habit is short and stocky, almost as wide as tall. Fall color in the south is usually bright red sometimes leaning toward orange-red. There seems to be some confusion with the similarity between 'Bonfire', 'Akaji nishiki' and 'Seigai'. It seems that these are three different plants, 'Bonfire' and 'Akaji Nishiki' leaves are practically the same but 'Bonfire' is shorter and denser.
