Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

'Bloodgood is probably the most well known Japanese maple all over the world. In fact it has become the standard by which all other red Japanese maples are measured. The dark rich purple spring color and brilliant red fall color are beautiful. 'Bloodgood' also displays bright red samaras during late spring and early summer that contrast nicely with the dark puple foliage. Although it is a great tree it does have some drawbacks. It will tolerate full sun in the Southeast but will have some sunscald on the upper most leaves during late summer in hot years. Since 'Bloodgood will actually become wider than tall at maturity make sure that it has plenty of room to grow, if not it might be smart to consider a more narrow cultivar.
